These Metatarsal pads by the Physiotherapy Room have been designed and made locally by Podiatrists and Physiotherapists in Canada!

Metatarsal pads help maintain the proper positioning of your foot and toes by holding up the balls of your feet.  They are also great for preventing issues down the road.

These Metatarsal pads come in pairs (2 per package).

What are Metatarsal Pads?

Metatarsal pads are small, unobtrusive pads that sit on your shoe's insole or footbed and are positioned behind the ball of your foot, in the space that exists just behind your metatarsal heads.

Metatarsal pads are one of the unsung heroes of natural foot health, and they represent a noninvasive and economical way to address a wide range of common foot and toe problems. Unlike conventional arch orthotics, which attempt to control the motion of your foot, metatarsal pads allow your foot to function the way nature intended; that is, flexing, bending, and articulating in a way that’s unconstrained by external factors or by forces acting upon it. Metatarsal pads work with your foot instead of trying to control it.

Over time the ball of your feet tend to collapse (the metatarsal heads collapse - usually the 2nd, 3rd and 4th toe).  You don't really notice this until one day you look at your feet and your toes are curled, you are achy and it feels like you are walking on a stone at times.

Where Do I Place These Pads?

You would usually place the pads just behind the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsal heads (behind the bumps on your feet or on your insole.

How do I know what size to order?

If you are new to metatarsal pads, we would suggest beginning with the Small (#2) to Medium (#3) and gradually progressing up in until you achieve the desired relief.  In general, the larger the pad you can get used to the more it will support and elevate your metatarsal heads.  This progression may take up to 6 months.

If your feet are small and you do not tolerate anything on the bottom of your feet we would suggest starting with a XSmall (size 1).

How Long Will They Last?

Depending on the usage. They will wear as well as the inside of your footwear.

How Do They Stay In Place?

They stay in place using 3M adhesive tape.

MetPad Placement Instructions

  1. Remove the sock liner from your footwear.
  2. Locate the imprint of your foot on the sock liner (if well used) if not, go to number 5.
  3. Place the widest edge (arrow will point towards your toes) within the MIDDLE of the balls of the toes (metatarsal heads).
  4. Once the placement is determined, peel back the adhesive tape by creasing the leading edge, folding it back and peeling back halfway. Place the leading edge (arrow direction) as described and center so that the rear narrow edge lines up with the center of your heel. Place firmly.
Note: The leading edge should just contact the middle allowing for the bulk of the Met Pad to begin just behind the balls of the toes. This is normal placement.
  5. If your sock liners are new or not worn long enough to determine a footprint:
    • Place your foot on the sock liner as it would be in your shoe.
    • Tuck a finger under the MIDDLE of the balls of the toes just behind (towards the heel) the balls. Once the spot is determined, lift your foot off and mark the location with a small line.
    • Now use the directions from number 3.

Repeat the above instructions for your other foot.

***Note: the met pad placement on each shoe should be very close. If not, re – adjust. If still not relatively equal be advised that the difference in placement will feel even more awkward.

Give yourself 1-2 weeks of break in as Met Pads require time for the body / brain to adjust to the new positioning.
